FJORD is pleased to announce our soccer-themed summer exhibition: <<Stoppage Time>> curated by Amira Pualwan and featuring the work of Mariel Capanna, David Lefkowitz, Henry Rosenberg, Deb Sokolow and collaborative duo Robbie Trocchia and Chessa D.
Unfolding in the periphery of the 2026 FIFA World Cup drama in Philadelphia and cities across North America, this exhibition uses soccer as a lens for examining the intertwined joy and pandemonium of sport and our humanity. What possibilities arise within the relationships between players, spectators and the spectacle, and during pauses in play?
Mariel Capanna uses the ancient technique of fresco to convey a timeless frenzy: a city playing host to a disorienting global event. David Lefkowitz’s ongoing painting series Transmission Interruption matches the aspect ratio of flat screen TVs and faithfully replicates glitches occurring during past men's and women's World Cup broadcasts. Henry Rosenberg’s works on paper begin in observed encounters of players on the soccer pitch and end in whimsical, speculative tableaus. Deb Sokolow’s drawings and artist book The Stadium and the Global Body tap into the networks of profit and infrastructure of social manipulation underpinning large-scale sporting events. In their video piece Spot Kick, Robbie Trocchia and Chessa D embody various players during a penalty shootout, staging tensions between their characters with an absurdist aesthetic sensibility.
At its core, soccer is simple; a field, a ball, a net, and two teams. As with art, the plot thickens once viewers are involved. Stoppage time is the term for accrued minutes added to each half of a soccer match by a referee that account for various pauses in active play. Within the gallery, it becomes a thematic launching point for spatial and temporal imaginaries to occur.
Later in the summer, a collaborative zine will be published which gathers selected works from the exhibition with visual and written contributions from twelve more artists– release date TBA.

Mariel Capanna is a Philadelphia-based artist and educator who explores the relationship between painting and time. She has been an artist in residence at the Guapamacátaro Art and Ecology Residency in Michoacan, MX; the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Madison, ME; and at the Tacony Library and Arts Building, Philadelphia, PA. Capanna is the recipient of the Robert Schoelkopf Memorial Traveling Fellowship and an Independence Foundation Visual Arts Fellowship. From 2021-2023, Capanna was the Mellon Post-MFA Fellow in Studio Art at Williams College, Williamstown, MA and is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, PA. Her Matrix exhibition at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, CT, is currently on view.

David Lefkowitz is an artist and educator based in Northfield, Minnesota whose work explores the blurry boundary between the human-built environment and the natural world. He has been a Professor of Art teaching painting and drawing at Carleton College since 1997, and is represented in several collections, including the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Langen Foundation in Neuss, Germany, and the Perez Art Museum in Miami, FL.

Henry Rosenberg is an artist and curator, based in New York. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including a recent solo exhibition at A365 Gallery. His work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the permanent collections of the South African Jewish Museum (Cape Town) and The Fabric Workshop and Museum (Philadelphia). His professional experience spans both scholarly and technical printmaking environments, including positions with the Department of Drawings and Prints at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Lower East Side Printshop, and Marginal Editions.

Deb Sokolow, based in Chicago, Illinois, is Associate Professor of Instruction in the department of Art Theory & Practice at Northwestern University. Her drawings, books and installations have been included in the 4th Athens Biennale, the 5th Chicago Architecture Biennial and in exhibitions at Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, The Drawing Center, Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, and Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, among many others. A short documentary on Sokolow’s art practice recently premiered at the MCA Chicago as part of 4×4: Contemporary Art in Chicago, a new annual series of four short documentaries about Chicago-based artists, filmed by Chicago-based filmmakers and produced by Pentimenti Productions.

Robbie Trocchia and Chessa D are multidisciplinary artists primarily working in performance, video, sound, and installation. Their projects, which take a playful and inquisitive approach to athletics, have been exhibited at Locust Projects and UNTITLED Art Fair (Miami), The Lab (San Francisco), Colgate University (Hamilton, NY), and INVERSE Performance Art Festival at The Momentary (Bentonville, AR).
