FJORD is pleased to announce the upcoming group exhibition On and Off from You, featuring works by Emily Selvin, Katelyn Chapman, and Tania Qurashi. Curated by gallery member Doah Lee, the exhibition will be on view from August 5th to September 16th and an opening reception will take place on August 5th from 6-9pm. This exhibition, On and Off from You, presents works by three female artists who are exploring complex notions of femininity, gender roles, and power dynamics through visual media, including painting, embroidery, glass art, and mixed media-based sculpture.
On and Off from You is a symbolic device used as a rebuttal to the “male gaze,” and how society sexually objectifies women.It depicts collective pain, and shows the challenges of living in a female body. Each artist uses their own social and cultural references and language to claim individual autonomy that reflects their identity and womanhood. The artists empower narratives and images of resisting social constructs and pressure, ranging from quiet subtle voices to bold and direct characters challenging the definition of femininity and “ways of seeing” one another.
About the Artists:
Emily Selvin has devoted her life to the arts. She began her journey as a classical ballet student at the Pennsylvania Ballet in the 1970s. From there, she went on to study geo-textile engineering at Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science, which encouraged her to develop her gift for botanical painting emphasizing the interplay of pictorial form on material field. Her later tenure at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts involved printmaking, classical painting, and prize-winning explorations of mixed media. Recently, her glass book Self Portrait in Dreams won exhibition space at the American Glass Guild’s juried exhibition American Glass Now: 2016, and traveled from Chicago to the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. Her current work focuses on social impact, with an emphasis on education and awareness of global gender issues and how they affect women.

Katelyn Chapman received an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Georgia in 2018 and a BFA with an emphasis in Drawing from Clemson University in 2014. Her work is inspired by her deeply rooted familial and rural ties to the South and has been in both national and local group exhibitions and publications. She is a two-time Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grantee (2019 & 2021) and has been awarded residency fellowships to attend Vermont Studio Center, The Hambidge Center, Chateau Orquevaux in France, and most recently attended Farwell House Residency in Frederick, IL. Chapman currently lives and works in Charleston, SC where she teaches full-time as a Professor of Allied Arts at The American College of the Building Arts and leads several workshops and classes at Redux Contemporary Art Center.

Tania Qurashi (b. New Jersey) is a painter based between Philadelphia and New Jersey. Qurashi received a BFA from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 2016 and an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 2021. Qurashi has exhibited her work in group exhibitions including Asian Arts Initiative, Stella Elkins Gallery, Amos Eno Gallery, and The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Museum and is a recipient of the 2021 Brodsky Center at PAFA James V. Nixon Jr. Award.
